Great day trips from Sierra Vista Arizona

Tombstone – only 16 miles on east on Hwy 90 and north on 83.  Known as the “Town To Tough To Die” remains much as it was during the 1880’s when it became the site of the infamous “Gunfight at the OK Corral”.  A variety of events and reenactment’s suitable for the whole family are held throughout the year.  520-457-9317 www.cityoftombstone.com

Bisbee – This quaint and historic town is the county seat of Cochise County and is a treasure trove of unique shops, restaurants, art gallery’s museums and mine tours set in an alpine atmosphere.  Known as “Queen of the Mining Camps” Bisbee is nestled in the Mule Mountains at a cool 5300 ft elevation, and about 26 miles from SV.  (520) 432-5421

Kartchner Caverns – just 19 miles north of Sierra Vista on state route 90; Kartchner Cavers is a huge limestone cave with 2 ½ miles of passages and a wide variety of unique formations.  Includes hiking trails, picnic and RV spaces and tours.  Best to make reservations in advance. Huachuca Mountains – Have some of the most celebrated birding spots in the U.S. and the hiking enthusiast will be challenged by more than 50 miles of trails with various degrees of difficulty. 

Parker Canyon Lake – On the western slope of the Huachuca’s this lake offers fishing, boating, hiking and camping.  The 133-acre lake is a favorite recreational area in southeast Arizona.  There is a marina with bait, boat rental, food & launching ramp.  A hiking trail surrounds the lake.  www.gf.state.az.us/h_f/waters_parker_canyon_lake

Coronado National Memorial – located very near the Mexican border in Montezuma Canyon.  A 14-foot high window wall at the rear of the museum offers an unobstructed view of the plant and wildlife native to the area.  Nearby Montezuma cave may be visited on a conditional basis.  Take Hwy 92 south approx.16 miles to 334-mile marker, turn right at the sign and follow the road for 5 miles. San Pedro Riparian National Conservation area - Area headquarters about 7 miles east of Sierra Vista on Hwy 90.  Covers an area 40 miles long & 3 to 5 miles wide, runs along the San Pedro River, one of a handful of rivers in the U.S. that flow north.  This is one of the most biologically diverse areas in North America.  Many recreational opportunities are available including bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling, picnicking & environmental education. Chiricahua National Monument – about 90 miles southeast.  Includes hiking trails, picnic areas, and the breathtaking “Wonderland of Rocks”.   A beautiful day trip from Sierra Vista, plan to take food and drink.  Water is available but little else.  520-824-3560

Fort Huachuca – Is an active U.S. Army Post currently operating under wartime restrictions.  It may not be open to the public depending on the level of security. 

Ramsey Canyon Preserve – Is one of the most popular nature viewing areas in southern Arizona.  Situated on the eastern slope of the Huachuca Mountains at an elevation of 5525 ft.  Dedicated to the quiet enjoyment of nature the preserve is a paradise for birding, hiking, photography and research.  www.ramseycanyoninn.com
